General Yurt Questions:

Who installs my yurt?

Most Colorado Yurt customers enjoy the satisfaction of setting up their yurt themselves with a group of friends and family. You will receive an easy to follow instruction manual when you place your order. It takes you step by step through the setup process and lists lots of helpful tips. Phone support is also available Monday through Friday should you have questions. There are a few folks that have a contractor set their yurt up. Very often it will be the same contractor they hire to build their yurt platform. If you are within 400 miles of our shop in Montrose, Colorado we have an installation crew that can fully install or help you install your yurt. Call 800.288.3190 for details and pricing.

How long does it take to set up a yurt?

It depends on the size of the yurt and options you've selected. Generally speaking, once you have your platform finished, the actual yurt installation takes from less than a day to up to three days. See Prices and Sizes for more specific information on how long it takes to put up each size of yurt.

How long do yurts last?

The wooden framework of the yurt will last indefinitely. The fabric cover of the yurt will generally last eight to fifteen years depending on the severity of UV rays in your climate and the exposure of your yurt to these UV rays. Extreme moisture and humidity are also environmental elements that may need special consideration. Consult with our experienced staff to help choose the right fabric for your climate. You should consider replacing the cover of your yurt much like you would consider painting a traditional home.

How do I care for my yurt once it is up?

You may want to occasionally wash the walls and roof with a very mild soap and a garden hose. We recommend a mild detergent such as Ivory Flakes which can be found in your local grocery store. Never pressure wash the fabric cover of your yurt as this will cause irreparable damage. Especially in harsh climates, it is a good idea to recoat the outside surface of the doors every few years with a wood stain or polyurethane for protection against the weather.

Are yurts eco-friendly?

Fabric yurts leave a very light footprint on the earth making them extremely environmentally friendly. The simple design of the yurt also requires far fewer of the earth's resources than a traditional stick built home. Yurts are a very eco-friendly alternative for those resolved to living a more sustainable and simple lifestyle.

Will my yurt require a building permit?

Building code requirements from state to state and even community to community can vary greatly so it is best to check with your local authorities prior to your yurt purchase. If you live in a rural area, your yurt may not need to be permitted. Yurts are classifed by permitting authorities in several different ways, including as a permanent structure or a temporary structure. They may also be viewed as an out building much like a garage or storage building. The best way to start is by taking our brochure, suggested deck plans and information about snow loads and wind capacities to your local planning and zoning office. If they need more information, we can provide you with engineering data compiled by an outside engineering firm to confirm the strength and integrity of Colorado Yurts.

In some cases the permitting office will require that the engineering data be wet stamped (certified) by an engineer from your state. We can provide this for most states in the U.S. The cost is $250. We are also working with a building codes consultant who has twenty years of experience in building regulations. She can research the codes as they relate to yurts in your county. The cost is $75 per hour and the research effort takes one to two hours on average. Call 800.288.3190 for more details.

Can yurts be connected together or with other structures?

Some customers choose to locate a bedroom, bathroom or office in a second yurt or other wooden structure. Attaching these to the main yurt can be as simple as builing a breezeway between the two. This may also be accomplished by building a hallway between door frames of both structures.
